Three Songs About Ex-Girlfriends

Music expresses moods. Whether we are happy or glad, or angry or sad, there are songs for every mood.

Love is one of the most common themes in music, and many sub-themes can be derived from within that. From first kisses to mourning soulmates, the spectrum of love is covered. Of course, part of the spectrum of love are lost loves.

Even within this sliver of the slice of music that are love songs, we can find different moods. That is the case with these three songs about ex-girlfriends. One of the songs is about reflecting on what might have gone differently, but didn't. One of the songs is about an ex-girlfriend for whom some bitterness seems to be mixed with a bit of lingering desire.

Before we get to those, here is a song to an ex-girlfriend that is about being bitter and spiteful, and holding a grudge.

Fuel Filter Fun

Kathy and Richard lived in many different places while Richard was in the military. Of course, that meant their children also moved around a lot.

Richard got stationed in North Carolina the year Tony turned eighteen. He decided to stay here in Washington rather than relocate back east with his family. Kathy and Richard gave him their 1987 Chevy Celebrity to help him with his independence, and he took a job in the family business to earn his own way.

Three Songs About Richard Nixon

Many people regard Nixon as nothing but evil. I don't go along with that belief. I think he was only eighty-five to ninety percent evil. However, when it comes to music, I cannot think of any popular song that praised him. The best I can come up with are the rather neutral comments in Lynard Skynard's song Sweet Home Alabama: "Watergate does not bother me. Does your conscience bother you?" Those don't really address Nixon so much as the Nixon era.

Three Seriously Stupid Serious Songs, part three

If there is one thing that guys understand about love, it is that we must always tell women that we will do the impossible in order to get them to love us back. Of course, that isn't true, but it is true that guys often make impossible claims for the purpose of proving their love.

That is the case with this part. Each of these songs is an appeal from a guy who is in love. Two are songs about the love the singer has having no limits, and the third is about an undisclosed limitation.

The standards for these songs are the same as in the first two parts. The song must have been popular enough to get radio air time, the song cannot have been a parody or intended to be funny, and, upon examination, the lyrics have to convey a seriously stupid thought or no thought at all.

Her Name is Imogene: My 1977 MG Midget

I haven't had a toy since I traded my '05 Suzuki Boulevard C-90 for an enclosed utility trailer that served me well. I sold it when I no longer needed it, and I searched the northwest to see what deal might be out there for me. I found about fifty vehicles that caught my eye for one reason or another. I kept an eye on these vehicles ranging from motor scooters to motor homes. There were many really good deals, and several of the vehicles that perked my interest most were either marked sold or the ad was deleted by the seller.

Imogene emerged from that search as the car that I wanted. She was in Oregon, and I needed to make certain that I wouldn't be wasting my time. I offered $100 on top of full asking price with the condition that I have two weeks to complete the deal in person and in cash. The seller agreed to the deal, and I started putting together the plan to bring her north. That didn't take long. Anthony agreed to drive his car down and follow me back in his car.

Three Songs About Addictions

Many musicians and other artists have lost wars to addictions. So have many everyday people. Addiction to substances are not new. The consequences can be deadly, and, unfortunately for many families, addictions are deadly every day.

There are many songs about addiction to choose from. Two of the three I chose are from the perspectives of the user. One is from the perspective of an observer. Each song deals with a different aspect of addiction.

One is a bit ironic. Let's start with that song.

You Hold Him Down; I'll Tie It To Him

Dave and I go back many years. There were thousands of times of getting stoned, playing darts, and having a drink or two. However, there were two nights that were memorable because instead of being stoned on pot, we were taking hallucinogens.

Dean and Bob joined us on the mushroom adventure. We went to the new Stadium Bowl that got washed away. We got what we needed and got out of there so we wouldn't get caught with our haul. It was off to J Street where we added 'shrooms to some cheap frozen pizza and made some terrible tasting tea. We weren't after the taste, and soon we were tripping.

If Schools Taught Life Skills in 1980

Many people have suggested that schools should teach children life skills rather than wild math and humanities concepts they will rarely use in life. I wonder how differently my life might have been had the schools emphasized teaching us how to deal with the problems our parents were facing, rather than teaching us how to convert problems stated in sentence form into mathematical equations.

I was personally cast into adulthood in the mid-'70s. I have never had an occasion to try to figure out how far apart two trains traveling in opposite directions would be after a certain amount of time. Instead, I had to deal with the same adult matters that my parents had been dealing with all along.

Ms. Woodstock: An Apathon Legend

Her name was Tauni Stone, but we all knew her as Ms. Woodstock on the Seattle Apathons bulletin board. She took the name because she lived in upper-New York, not too far from Max Yasgur's farm where the famous concert took place. It was an appropriate name for her. She related well to the hippie movement, even if she really was a bit too young to have participated. That was the case for most of us Apathons.

She was open about her battle with multiple sclerosis. She and fellow Apathon, Alizarinred, taught many of us about the struggles posed by the disease through their regular chats about the topic. They talked about the side effects of some of the medications and the pain they suffered on the bad days. They talked of trying to lead normal lives, but we all saw them as extraordinary people.

Parents Beware: Schools No Longer Teach This Important Skill

I was talking to a young parent who told me that the schools today are stupid because they teach this new math that he doesn’t understand. I told him schools have gotten easier and easier than they were when I attended school. I told him kids his age, and kids today, do not understand that because they do not have a clue about school when I attended. They used to teach us important skills.

Farley's Wit - Number 8: Federal Court Nominations and Setting Up a Super-PAC

Hello. I'm G. Gordon Farley, the first name in Farley Swit.

Most judges on the state and local levels are elected, but judges on the federal level are appointed.

When there is a vacancy on the federal level, from Circuit Courts to the Supreme Court, due to retirement or death, the President considers people who are available and qualified to do the job.

Super Bowl 50 Trivia

We are two days away from Super Bowl 50, which will be the first Super Bowl not designated by a Roman numeral. Fifty in Roman numerals is "L," and "L" is also a symbol that has come to mean "loser." The NFL will resume using Roman numerals for Super Bowl LI.

Despite this being Super Bowl 50, it is only the 48th game dubbed as the "Super Bowl." The first two were called "The AFL-NFL World Championship," and were later known as Super Bowls I and II.

The King Who Was President and Other Presidential Tidbits

John Adams is dubbed as "the man who would be king," but he was not a king. He was a President. We did have an unelected King who served as President. I presume many of you already know who I am talking about.

Some of you may also know who the first President was born in the United States. You may even know who the first President was born on his birthday, or which President became the oldest living President twice.

If so, I hope you find something that you did not know before.

If you do not know who these Presidents are, then let us get on with some obscure Presidential trivia!

Is It Measure Once?

There are three types of calls I do not like receiving. One is from a telephone solicitor, another is from someone wanting a ride to the airport at 5 in the morning, and the third is from someone who does not own a pick up or van wanting help moving something that will not fit into his or her car.

Of the three, I usually prefer the telephone solicitor.

My buddy Donnie called me with a unique approach. He asked, "Can you help me get a storm door for my mom's house, or do you want to loan me your van?"

Farley's Wit - Number 7: Protection Orders and Handy Free Pamphlet

Hello. I'm G. Gordon Farley, the first name in Farley Swit.

People can turn to the courts to seek protection from someone who is harassing or threatening them.

Once the person is served a temporary protection order, it is illegal for them to make contact with, or be near, the protected party.

Farley's Wit - Number 6: Public Defenders and Pharmaceutical Lawsuit Representation

Hello. I'm G. Gordon Farley, the first name in Farley Swit.

People who are charged with crimes have the right to an attorney even if they cannot afford one.

These attorneys are called Public Defenders.

Farley's Wit - Number 5: Abuse of Deferments and Class Action Representation

Hello. I'm G. Gordon Farley, the first name in Farley Swit.

Criminal justice is not only about punishment for criminals, but also rehabilitation for people who make mistakes.

For less serious crimes, prosecutors often offer deferment for rehabilitative purposes, rather than putting these people in jail.

Farley's Wit - Number 4: Reasonable Doubt for Prosecutors and DUI Representation

Hello. I'm G. Gordon Farley, the first name in Farley Swit.

Prosecutors carry a heavy burden in those relatively few instances when plea agreements are not reached.

The standard in criminal cases is 'beyond reasonable doubt.'

Farley's Wit - Number 2: Justice System in Anatomical Terms and Bankruptcy Representation

Hello. I'm G. Gordon Farley, the first name in Farley Swit.

The justice system in America can be thought of in human anatomical terms.

The legislative and executive branches of government create laws. The legislative and executive branches, therefore, are the brains of the justice system.
