May showed up at the office unexpectedly one day. She was always welcome, but this day she seemed to have a reason. She appeared agitated, so Dad invited her into his office to vent a bit.
"I’m so upset with Sears," she told him.
He assured her that Sears always makes good on any customer complaint, and always honors its warranties.
"I just can’t believe they did that to me," she went on. "Don’t you have a friend who works there," she asked?
"Yes," he replied. "My good friend Roger is a Vice President with them."
She kept on complaining while Dad dug through his rolodex and dialed the direct number to Roger. He answered.
"Roger, I have a friend who is having a problem with Sears," he told him. "I assured her you would help take care of it." He then asked May what the problem was.
She told him, "I bought a dozen sheets from Sears, and I got screwed on all of them!"
Dad held back the laughter and turned a nice shade of red as he told Roger that he thought it could be resolved another way, and changed the topic to how Roger and his family were doing while May sat there beaming a smile knowing she had beaten Dad at his own game!
Dad would often remember that as one of the best, if not the best, practical jokes anyone ever pulled on him!
